Party countdown

You’re having a party...now how do you get organized so it all comes off just the way you want? Use this handy party countdown checklist, and you’ll be ready and waiting when your guests arrive!

Three weeks before

  • Decide on the type of party you’ll have – cocktail, brunch, dinner – and your party theme.
  • Make your guest list, then decide on how you will go about inviting your guests – don’t forget to ask guests to RSVP if you need a head count for food and drinks.
  • Send out your invitations.

Two weeks before

  • Plan your menu, then develop a shopping list of ingredients you’ll need.
  • Take an inventory of what you have and what you’ll need in the way of supplies – everything from tables and chairs, to dinnerware, linens and serving pieces. Check that what you have is polished, clean and in good working order. Than borrow, buy or rent what you don’t have.
  • Buy non-perishable decor pieces like ornaments and candles.
  • Create your music mix.

One week before

  • Clean out your fridge to make room for your party food.
  • Do some de-cluttering and any other heavy cleaning that needs to be done prior to your event.
  • Check with those who have not yet sent in their RSVPs.
  • Pick up your liquor, soft drinks and non-perishable foods.

Three days before

  • Do a general cleaning of your home, including living and dining room, bathrooms and kitchen.
  • Clear out your hall closet for guest’s coats.
  • Make or purchase a centrepiece for your table.
  • Shop for the rest of your groceries (except bread or buns).
  • Start your desserts and baking.

One day before

  • Give the bathrooms a final wipe-down, and vacuum your main party rooms.
  • Purchase flowers and keep in a cool area until party time.
  • Pick up any clutter.
  • Prepare your vegetables and other side dishes (wash, cut, and store).
  • Marinade meats.
  • Set your tables.
  • Set up your bar.
  • Make a detailed list of what needs to be cooked and in what order for party day.
  • Go for a manicure or get your hair done.

Party day!

  • Try and do some light exercise the day of the party to keep you relaxed – a walk or yoga is ideal.
  • Cook all dishes, and plan how you’re going to keep things warm before serving.
  • Put out all flowers.
  • Buy bread and put out with appetizers.
  • Turn on the music, turn out the lights and light your candles.
  • Leave yourself plenty of time to get ready so you’re standing by when the first guests arrive!
