Entertaining on a budget

A little strapped for cash? You can still have a great party! Try these creative ways to keep your costs down and your party spirit up!
PLANNING
- Plan – being disorganized usually costs in more ways than one!
- Share the fun – and the expenses – and host a party with a friend or family member.
- Your party doesn’t have to be fancy. Keep it simple and casual, and be creative. For example, invite friends over for popcorn, and a movie...what could be simpler?
- Have a theme party – they’re lots of fun and don’t cost much. Examples could be: international foods, games night, cookie exchanges...the list is endless.
- Downsize. If you’d like to host a party for 50 but only have a budget for 25, cut your list back.
- If you really want more people than your budget can afford, have an open house where friends can just drop by for a drink and some nibbles.
FOOD & BEVERAGES
- Buy food, drinks, even liquor in bulk to save.
- Have a lunch or brunch instead of an elaborate dinner.
- Or, have your party late (i.e., after dinner) and just serve desserts and coffee.
- Consider serving the food instead of a buffet, so you can control portions and ensure less waste.
- Stick with simple fare – casseroles, lasagne, garlic bread, chili, pasta or potato salads, chicken...foods likes these are inexpensive and satisfy any palate.
- Host a potluck where everyone brings a dish to share – just keep an eye on who is bringing what so you can balance it with an extra salad or dessert as necessary.
- Serve punch to keep your liquor costs down.
- Dress up foods with pretty herbal sprigs, cherry tomatoes, walnuts, etc., and turn simple into elegant.
- Stay away from pre-assembled platters – you pay a premium for the convenience and you can make your own platters that will look much nicer and are probably fresher.
- Save your leftovers for dinners and lunches in the days post-party.
DECOR
- Create your own centrepieces and make your decor items.
- Candles are an inexpensive way to give your home a festive feeling.
SUPPLIES
- Pick up what you need in the way of plates, cutlery, napkins, glassware, etc. at your local dollar store.
- Borrow serving pieces and table linens from friends or family.
- Download free or inexpensive tunes and create a custom mix of music.
- If kids are coming, make “loot bags” of little games and crafts from the dollar store to keep them busy and entertained. Also, pick up a couple of DVDs and set up a “movie room” for them to hang out in.
