Avoid Party Mistakes

Even the best-planned affairs can have some unpleasant surprises. Here’s how you can steer clear of some of the most common party pitfalls.

Before the Party
Consider your neighbours. It’s wise to let your neighbours know that you’re having a party. Between the parking and the noise, it can leave them inconvenienced, disturbed and angry. You could consider inviting them, but otherwise drop them a note and let them know you’re entertaining...and drop off a plate of cookies or a bottle of wine to thank them for being nice neighbours after the party.

Make the food memorable. There are few things more upsetting than trying a new recipe that fails (test it first), not having enough food (too much is always better...you can always enjoy the leftovers), or serving food that guests can’t eat (ask beforehand if guests have any food allergies or restrictions).

Confirm with your guests. The best way to ensure you’re preparing for the appropriate number of guests is to request an RSVP. Surprisingly, many of those invited may not respond, but may indeed come to the party – and bring along others! Take the time a few days before your party to contact those you have not heard from to confirm attendance and numbers.

During the party
A food “backup” plan. One advantage of serving a wide selection of foods is that if something doesn’t work out, you have plenty of other dishes. But if you’re planning a “star” dish, be certain that it will be a hit. Watch it carefully to ensure it doesn’t overcook, burn, get too cold or fall apart. And consider having a “backup” dish (like lasagne) ready, just in case.

Have fun. With any party or event, unforeseen things are bound to happen. It’s great to be prepared, but also important to remember that guests want you to be enjoying the occasion. Take any unexpected surprises in stride, and don’t get so bogged down in the preparation and details that you get flustered when you have to make a quick change in plans. Take a deep breath and, above all, keep your sense of humour!

After the party
Make sure guests get home safely. The most important thing to watch out for is guests drinking and driving. You can help prevent guests from getting intoxicated by offering non-alcoholic drinks, or stop serving alcoholic beverages at least an hour before the end of the party. Be watchful, and if you notice a guest drinking too much, insist on calling a cab. However, it may be easier to encourage guests to come to the party using alternate modes of transportation so there are no concerns.
